Fighting Cancer

This is a collection of the info i got when researching on how to fight breast cancer. The information came from many sites but each food on the list above has an explanation below as to why I put it on the list. I have broken this document into sections of the areas of concern ie;
1. Foods that fight Cancer
2. Boosting Immunities
3.Lowering estrogen
4.Increasing oxygen in the body
(I would love any input anyone has in the comments below especially if you have anything you want me to add to the list)

FOODS THAT FIGHT BREAST CANCER

  1. MUSHROOMS A study published in Nutrition and Cancer in 2010 found that higher mushroom intake is associated with a lower risk of breast cancer among women who are premenopausal. Cremini, oyster and shiitake mushrooms, among others, contain antioxidants such as L-ergothioneine that may confer cancer protection.
  2. BROCCOLI SPROUTS************ These peppery sprouts are high in sulforaphane, an antioxidant that University of Michigan scientists found may target and destroy cells that fuel tumour growth.
  3. POMEGRANATES********* The crunchy seeds of a pomegranate (also referred to as arils) are well endowed with ellagic acid, a potent antioxidant that may inhibit an enzyme that plays a role in breast cancer development, according to U.S. scientists from the City of Hope’s Beckman Research Institute. Pomegranates, a rich source of antioxidants, have also been linked to improved heart health. You can get the same antioxidants from pure pomegranate juice, but drink only one cup (250 mL) a day to keep sugar intake in check, or have half of a fruit.
  4. LENTILS A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2009 analyzed the dietary patterns of more than 3,500 Asian-American women and found that a higher intake of legumes, which include lentils and beans, was associated with lower breast cancer risk. Though often overlooked, budget-friendly lentils are brimming with folate, fibre and a host of other nutrients that may help keep breast cancer at bay.
  5. WALNUTS************* Preliminary data suggests that snacking on up to two ounces (60 g) of walnuts a day could halt the development of breast cancer tumours. Researchers from West Virginia’s Marshall University School of Medicine surmise that walnuts’ omega-3s, antioxidants and phytosterols may help slow the growth of cancerous cells.
  6. BLUEBERRIES************ Research suggests that pterostilbene, a phytonutrient in blueberries, can halt the growth of breast cancer tumours by causing cancerous cells to self-destruct, a process called apoptosis. And frozen wild blueberries are just as antioxidant- and nutrient-packed as fresh.
  7. SPINACH Premenopausal women with the highest average intakes of dietary folate (a good source is spinach) according to a study in the American Journal of Epidemiology in 2011. The B vitamin is necessary for proper cell division, and stymies changes to DNA that may lead to breast cancer.
  8. EGGS CHILINE AN ESSENTIAL NUTRIENT ABUNDANT IN EGGS. WOMEN SHOULD AIM FOR 425 MILLIGRAMS PER DAY, THERE ARE 126 MILLIGRAMS IN A LARGE EG. THIS ESSENTIAL NURTIENTS FOUND IN THE YOLK IS NECESSARY TO ENSURE PROPER CELL FUNCTIONING
  9. SALMON********** Also, eating fresh or canned salmon provides docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a supercharged omega-3 fat that may kill off breast cancer cells and help stop the spread of the disease to other parts of the body.
  10. RYE BREAD********** A synergy between fibre, lignans, vitamins, minerals and the phytonutrient phytic acid make rye bread a breast cancer fighter. When buying, check the ingredient list to ensure that the first item is whole rye flour and not wheat flour.

BOOSTING IMMUNITIES

  1. Become Aware of Phytochemicals “Phyto” means plant. Phytochemicals are nutrients derived from plants, and they are healthy buzzwords in nutrition and cancer research. Phytochemicals appear to stimulate the immune system, exhibit antibacterial and antiviral activity, and, in general, help your body fight cancer. Some foods these are found in are onions, garlic, leeks, chives, carrots, sweet potatoes, apricots, tea, coffee, citrus fruits, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, kale, cauliflower), berries, beans and whole grains.

DECREASING ESTROGEN

  1. Red or orange vegetables and fruits are rich sources of beta-carotene, a precursor that is used to make vitamin A in your body. Natalie Ledesma, MS, RD, CSO, at the University of California, San Francisco, advises daily consumption of beta-carotene in the form of carrots, sweet potatoes, melon, squash or mango. Beta-carotene and chemically-related carotenoid compounds are effective in reducing the growth of estrogen receptor positive and negative breast tumor cells. High levels of beta- carotene are associated with up to 50 percent reduction in the risk of breast cancer.
  2. SOYBEAN AND SOY PRODUCTS BROCCOLI AND CABBAGE THE RAWER THE BETTER THIS IS THE FIFTH DR THAT RECOMMENDED OATS AND WHOLE GRAINS.. FOR CANCER FIGHTING AND... RELATED TO TUMORS... AND NOW IN RELATION TO ESTROGEN. David Grotto, RD, LD, notes that the high fiber content of foods containing oats and whole grains may block harmful estrogens. In addition to decreasing estrogen, a switch to whole grains improves overall health. High-fiber foods make you feel full and satisfied for longer, reducing the likelihood that you will overeat and gain weight. In addition, Grotto states that oats increase the activity of particular immune cells known as natural killer T cells and may enhance your body's ability to eliminate tumor cells.

  3. Watermelons This is one of the best oxygen rich foods. The watermelon is highly alkaline with one pH value of 9. Thanks to its high fiber and water content, it works as a mild diuretic.
